Personality is defined as the enduring qualities of an individual shown in his or her ways of behaving in a wide variety of circumstances.
The problem here is of personality versus illness - and the differentiation is on the basis of the duration of the unusual behaviour. Thus, if the behaviour has always been abnormal or maladaptive then the implication is of personality disorder. If the person is previously normal and begins to behave abnormally, this implies an illness.
