Organic psychiatric disorders
Organic psychiatric disorders are psychiatric disorders which are caused by demonstrable pathology of the brain or other organ.
The causes include:
- structural disease e.g. brain tumour
- epilepsy
- anoxic or hypoglycaemic brain damage
- degenerative changes e.g. Alzheimer's dementia
- brain trauma
Organic psychiatric disorders are classified as follows:
- acute generalized impairment (delerium)
- chronic impairment:
- generalized (dementia)
- specific syndromes
