The term ambivalence has two uses:

  • in psychodynamic formulation it is used to signify conflicting emotions or attitudes to a person, place or idea

  • in schizophrenia and some organic syndrome it refers to an abnormal psychomotor state in which the patient physically vacillates between two opposing courses of action
