Proctitis in ulcerative colitis

In some patients with ulcerative colitis the disease is confined to the lower rectum.

The rectal mucosa has a granular appearance and this condition is often known as granular proctitis.

This condition is of unknown origin and has a self-limiting course. The condition may be exacerbated at periods of 'stress' (1).
