Capsaicin is thought to act as an analgesic by depleting pain neurones of substance P.

Applied as a cream to the affected area, capsaicin is licensed for:

  • post-herpetic neuralgia
  • painful diabetic neuropathy, under the supervision of a hospital consultant
  • osteoarthritis
