vaping in children

Authoring team

Data suggest that the use of vaping devices can lead to both short- and long-term respiratory morbidity in the paediatric population (1).

A systematic review found (2):

  • the most consistent associations for harm were reported in large cross-sectional studies of cough, wheeze, bronchitic symptoms, anxiety, depression and panic disorder
  • is strong evidence from longitudinal studies that vaping increases risk of subsequent cigarette initiation, particularly in younger adolescents
  • the authors concluded:
    • although the longer-term consequences are unknown, the findings highlight the need for introduction of legislation that protects children and young people from the harms of vaping in the UK
