Aetiology
Causes include:
- preterm delivery
- birth asphyxia or injury
- sepsis
- diabetic mother
- surgery
- exchange transfusion
- respiratory distress syndrome
Hypocalcaemia after four or five days may be a result of maternal hyperparathyroidism secondary to vitamin D deficiency, or it may result from the high phosphate content of unmodified cow's milk.
Other causes include DiGeorge syndrome.
