Congenital oesophageal hernia
Congenital oesophageal hernia include:
- congenital paraoesophageal hernia:
- extremely rare
- possibly caused by a developmental defect in the right crus of the diaphragm
- defect is usually anteriorly and to the right of the oesophagus
- the oesophageal hiatus is usually not affected:
- this retains the functional competence of the oesophago-gastric junction
- consequently, there are few problems with reflux
- may not present clinically, but may be discovered incidentally or as a result of the stomach rolling up into the sac and incarcerating
congenital sliding hernia:
þþ also very rare
- may be due to a short oesophagus
