Bacterial overgrowth

Authoring team

The normal jejunum contains 10 - 1000 organisms per ml. A total aerobic plus anaerobic count of more than 100,000 is diagnostic of bacterial overgrowth.

The bacterial load of the stomach and the small bowel is maintained at a low level because of:

  • gastric acid
  • high intestinal motility
