Treatment
Antibacterial treatment:
- combination of rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol and streptomycin
Local treatment:
- splinting of the joint concerned - for example, use an abduction frame for an affected hip in a child
- surgical aspiration / drainage of abscesses
- review at four months: - encourage active movements if the articular cartilage is intact - arthrodesis if the articular cartilage is destroyed
- consider operative replacement if joint destruction severe
