This is a test used to diagnose a ruptured Achilles tendon.
The patient is laid prone with both feet clear of the examination couch. The calf muscle is gently squeezed. Plantar flexion of the foot indicates that the tendon is intact. If the foot remains still or movement is slight, the tendon is most probably ruptured. Both sides should be compared.
