Scapula fracture

Authoring team

80-90% of all scapular fractures occurred during high-energy trauma such as motor vehicle collisions, falls, cycling crashes and other high impact trauma. Ribs may also be fractured and there may be dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint.

Scapular fractures are uncommon, accounting for less than 1 percent of all fractures. This may be because they typically result from high-energy trauma which often occurs with multi-system injuries.

A fracture of the glenoid may occur during a direct blow to the shoulder.

When a scapula is fractured shoulder movements are still possible, although painful.
