Assessing flexion

Authoring team

Flexion at the hip is assessed by first moving the better hip into full flexion with one hand while the other hand is placed under the lumbar spine. The other hip is then flexed passively, ensuring that no pelvic movement occurs. The range of movement of the poorer hip is noted: it should normally be 120 degrees. Any fixed flexion deformity should also be noted. The test is repeated on the other side.
