Complications
Complications that arise with internal fixation are either associated with the operation itself:
- infection - in closed fractures, the operation is inescapably the culprit - meticulous aseptic technique is essential. An infected implant may need replacing
- irreversible damage to skin, nerves and vessels during fracture exposure
- non-union - rigidly fixed fragments held too far apart
OR, from subsequent management:
- failure of the implant - full weightbearing introduced too early may cause the plate to break
- re-fracture - implant removed too early - recommend at least 12 months, preferably 18-24 before implant removal
