The development of oedema in a burn wound occurs in two phases. Within the first hour, the first fluid accumulation occurs. Then there is a slow and more sustained second phase commencing 12-24 hours after the burn and lasting up to 48 hours. Finally, resolution with an overall fluid reabsorption into the circulation, begins at between 48-72 hours.
