The non-paralytic squint surgical indications are:

  • when vision is equal in the two eyes, the squint often seems to alternate, i.e. either eye will maintain fixation. Surgery realigns the visual axes in order to consolidate binocular function - if present or possible
  • surgery may also be undertaken to improve appearance

The principle of surgery is that opposing extraocular muscles - e.g. medial rectus and lateral rectus - are weakened and strengthened in their actions by recession of the insertion of one and resection of a portion of the other muscle respectively.
