In females with vestibular fistulae, the gastrointestinal tract opens into the vestibule immediately behind the hymen. This necessitates the initial formation of a protective colostomy followed by a later posterior sagittal anorectoplasty entailing the separation of rectum from vagina.
The prognosis is excellent. Over 90% of patients go on to have normal voluntary bowel movements.
