Systemic treatments

Authoring team

Two types of systemic treatment are available:

  • hormonal therapy
  • cytotoxic chemotherapy

Hormonal therapy is best suited in the presence of slow growing disease, where the tumour is known to be oestrogen sensitive and since it is well tolerated it is ideal for elderly and unfit patients.

Cytotoxic chemotherapy is better suited where the tumour is rapidly progressive and when the tumour is oestrogen receptor negative.
