The myositis of polymyositis and dermatomyositis results in:

  • muscle tenderness
  • proximal, symmetrical muscle weakness
  • may present as difficulty rising from a chair or climbing stairs

In severe cases there may be:

  • dysphagia
  • dysphonia
  • respiratory failure
