Ultrasonography of a women with threatened abortion will determine whether the gestation sac and the foetus have survived.
The "blighted ovum" syndrome is the finding of an empty gestation sac - the embryo having died from some congenital defect.
When there is abortion of a twin pregnancy, ultrasound will show whether one or both of the foetuses have died.
