Criteria for the use of forceps

Before forceps are used the following conditions must be met:

  • the presentation must be suitable
  • there must be full dilatation of the cervix
  • the head must be engaged
  • the membranes must be ruptured
  • the bladder must be empty
  • the uterus should be contracting
  • the operator should be experienced
  • there should be adequate analgesia
  • a paediatrician should be on hand
