Heart defects

Authoring team

In England approximately 25% of fetal cardiac anomalies are detected.

Visualisation of the valves and the four chambers of the heart allows prenatal diagnosis of cardiac defects such as:

  • Fallot's tetralogy
  • left heart hypoplasia
  • atrioventricular valve hypoplasia

Trusts are working towards improved cardiac detection rates following recommendation by NICE that the major vessels in the heart should be examined during the 18+0-20+6 week fetal anomaly scan (1)

These diagnoses will affect the neonatal management of the fetus.
