On-table preparation

In preparation for appendicectomy, the patient is placed supine. Ideally, the table should have the facility for tilting - this permits rotating of the left side inferiorly to aid in delivery of the caecum and appendix through the wound.

Antiseptic skin preparation should extend from the nipples to the thigh. Drapes should be laid so as to keep exposed the rectangle containing the:

  • umbilicus and midline
  • anterior superior iliac spine on the right
  • right flank
