Investigations
Possible investigations include:
- full blood count
- iron, ferritin, folate and red cell folate
- ESR and CRP
- stool examination - microscopy, test for the presence of reducing substances and fat globules
- stool culture
- hydrogen breath test - this test allows the diagnosis of incomplete carbohydrate digestion and absorption in a non-invasive manner.
- sweat test - this will identify cystic fibrosis and discriminate similar presenting conditions such as congenital pancreatic hypoplasia.
- small bowel biopsy, looking also for antigliadin antibody
