Procedure
Biopsies are readily taken from the second part of the duodenum during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. A Crosby-Watson capsule is swallowed and guided through the pylorus and duodenum with screening. When in position, a small sample of mucosa is obtained by suction, the capsule removed immediately and the sample placed in 10% formalin.
Complications:
- sore throat - occasionally reported; transient
- haemorrhage - rare, less than 0.1%.
- perforation - extremely rare
- retained capsule - extremely uncommon
