This is the explanation that there is a risk factor, not yet identified, that has led to the increased rates of coronary heart disease that occurs in South Asians.
Risk factors that have been suggested include the use of ghee and other cooking oils, racism, insulin resistance and specific lipid abnormalities. As yet, none of these risk factors have been proven as the cause of increased heart disease in South Asians. However the best studied is that of insulin resistance which underlies the high rates of diabetes in South Asians.
