Intracerebal causes of sudden visual loss include:

  • stroke, characterised by homonymous hemianopia and normal pupil reactions
  • migraine, characterised by:
    • typical aura
    • scintillating scotoma
    • flashing lights
    • gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting
    • complete recovery in almost all cases
