Subacute combined degeneration is the classical metabolic disorder of the spinal cord - it is due to vitamin B12 deficiency. It can also be caused by folate deficiency.
The posterior columns and corticospinal tracts are specifically damaged, but the clinical picture is complicated by the early development of coexistent peripheral nerve damage.
