Secondary neuralgia

Secondary neuralgias are due to physical damage to nerves. These include:

  • postherpetic neuralgia
  • brainstem lesions e.g. tumour, demyelination, thrombosis, syringomyelia
  • base of skull tumours e.g. deep lobe tumours of parotid, nasopharyngeal tumours
  • an elongated styloid process may irritate the glossopharyngeal nerve as it passes the tonsil fossa
  • a glomus tumour may involve the glossopharyngeal nerve
  • Sluder's or anterior ethmoidal neuralgia
