Prognosis

Authoring team

The prognosis in hypertensive encephalopathy is generally good but dependent on the underlying aetiology:

  • eclampsia and acute nephritis - excellent prognosis if detected early

  • malignant hypertension - good prognosis providing that aggressively treated

Recovery from focal symptoms usually occurs within a few days. Persistent and frequent paroxysms indicate a poor prognosis.
