Muscle disease which can affect eye movements include:

  • myasthenia gravis - this is a diagnosis that should be considered if the movement problem doesn't appear to fit into any of the other groups. Principal features are its variability and its fatiguability.

  • Grave's disease - this being the only myopathy that is regularly seen in clinical practice that also affects the eye muscles. The pathology is based on inflammation and fibrosis, and particular features to look for are lid lag, lid retraction and proptosis.
