Clinical examination
In the examination of the accessory nerve, ask the patient:
- to shrug there shoulders - feel the bulk of trapezius muscles and then attempt to push his shoulders down
- to turn his head against resistance - the examiner's hands - and feel the bulk of the sternomastoid muscles
