The cerebellum coordinates muscle movements. Various tests are used to examine the patient's coordination. Always demonstrate the tests first for the patient.

  • finger nose test - see menu
  • rapidly alternating movements, e.g. move fingers like playing a piano, pronation and supination of his hand on the dorsum of his other hand as quickly as possible
  • rebound - ask the patient to raise his arms rapidly from his sides and then stop when requested. In a patient with cerebellar disease there may be a delay in stopping the arms due to hypotonia.
