The superior medial genicular artery is a branch of the popliteal artery. It passes superiorly and medially from the popliteal fossa to the medial head of gastrocnemius. It passes around the medial supracondylar line anteriorly. Passing deep to adductor magnus, it lies superior to the superior origins of the tibial collateral ligament. At this point it begins to anastomose with the other genicular vessels constituting the superficial and deep genicular plexuses:

  • over the anterior femur and patella with the:
    • superior medial genicular artery
    • descending branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery
    • deep branch of descending genicular artery
  • over the tibia with the two inferior genicular arteries
