Most patients with type II membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis have in their serum a factor called C3 nephritic factor. This is an IgG autoantibody against the alternate C3 convertase in the complement cascade.
The C3 nephritic factor stabilises the alternate C3 convertase resulting in excessive C3b production.
