Authoring team

This is an itchy inflammatory nodule with a small blackish opening at the centre, found in the periungal region of a toe. Secondary super-infection may occur, with abscess formation.

Tungiasis is caused by a flea which lives in the blood called Tunga penetrans. Infestation typically occurs on the feet of those who walk barefoot in endemic areas of Africa and Central America.
