Prognosis

Authoring team

PCP occurring in a patient is an indicator of something going seriously wrong elsewhere. If it occurs in conjunction with HIV infection there is a 10% mortality and in broad terms that individual has a prognosis of 50% survival at 2 or 3 years.

The poor prognosis is anticipated by the administration of prophylactic antibiotics (co-trimoxazole and inhaled pentamidine) to people with known HIV infection as their CD4 positive count falls below 200.
