Simple but effective measures such as careful hand-washing, cannula and catheter care should be undertaken. The more expensive measures such as isolation units however are of limited value.
Antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral prophylaxis should also be considered.
Immunization may play a role, though response is variable.
Prophylactic granulocyte transfusions are ineffective.
