Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is a condition associated with hypokalaemia and episodes of weakness which may be profound. The weakness does not usually involve bulbar and respiratory function.
This disorder is commonly caused by medication, especially diuretics. There is also an inherited membrane disorder that predisposes patients to episodes of hypokalaemic periodic paralysis. In the inherited cases, the condition often occurs during a period of rest after exercise or a meal.
