Causative organisms
Chronic osteomyelitis is always a mixed infection. The common organisms include:
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Escherichia coli
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- Proteus spp.
- Pseudomonas spp.
In the presence of a foreign implant, a common opportunist is Staphylococcus epidermidis.
