Chinese food and soups contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) as the main addictive ingredient

Excess ingestion of MSG results in a syndrome that includes a burning sensation over the neck, chest and arms, with tightness over the face and chest

  • may also be headache, flushing, weakness, nausea and abdominal cramps
  • angioedema may be delayed up to 8–16 h after the consumption of MSG and it may persist for 24 h (1)
