Epidemiology
Invasive aspergillosis is:
- a disease of the immunosuppressed (e.g. HIV, patients receiving chemotherapy) and the chronically ill. Also may occur following broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy
- not uncommon: 4% of unselected patients dying in European tertiary referral centres have invasive aspergillosis at post-mortem
- underdiagnosed: a third are diagnosed at death
