Neonates, especially if premature, are prone to infection by opportunists such as Escherichia coli or Bacteroides spp.

Under the age of 4 years Haemophilus influenzae is common.

All age-groups may be infected by Staphylococcus aureus or other Gram positive cocci such as Streptococcus pyogenes or Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Heroin addicts and the immunocompromised are prone to opportunistic pathogens.

Patients with sickle-cell anaemia are prone to Salmonella spp. ostemyelitis.
