Acute leukaemia may present as a medical emergency:

  • sepsis - broad-spectrum antibiotics
  • leucostasis - leucopheresis plus chemotherapy
  • disseminated intravascular coagulation - replacement of platelets, coagulation factors and fibrinogen; heparin is also sometimes used
