Thrombosis
Thrombosis is the pathological formation of clot.
Examples of clinically-relevant thrombosis include:
- coronary thrombosis, frequently leading to myocardial infarction
- cerebral thrombosis, causing strokes
- deep vein thrombosis
- arterial thrombosis e.g. in the lower limb
- heparin-induced thrombosis
Thrombolytic and anticoagulant drugs are used to treat thrombosis; surgical intervention may be required.
Thromboembolism may be a sequel to thrombosis.
