Sideroblast

Authoring team

A sideroblast is a nucleated erythrocyte in bone marrow containing iron granules in its cytoplasm. When iron is being metabolised normally about a third of normoblasts seen in bone marrow aspirate contain ferritin granules, seen best with Prussian blue staining.

The formation of these stores of iron is thought to be a consequence of an imbalance of haem and globin synthesis.
