factor VIII circulates in the plasma in a noncovalent complex with von Willebrand factor, vWF. VWF enhances factor VIII synthesis, protects it from proteolysis, and concentrates it at sites of active haemostasis (von Willebrand factor binds to subendothelial matrix proteins and adherent platelets).
