Drug-induced platelet dysfunction
Causes include:
- aspirin:
- irreversibly acetylates platelet cyclo-oxygenase and impairs thromboxane A2 production
- the effects of aspirin on platelets lasts 1 week
- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- dipyrimadone
- sulphinpyrazone
- penicillin and cephalosporins (high doses)
- tricyclic antidepressants
- heparin
- dextran
