Sex during pregnancy

Authoring team

There is no evidence that sexual intercourse during pregnancy is harmful. However many obstetricians recommend sexual intercourse should be avoided during the first trimester if woman has a history of recurrent miscarriages.

In the third trimester, due to her increased size, the woman may find certain positions for sexual intercourse more comfortable e.g. side-by-side, woman-on-top.

NICE suggest that:

  • pregnant woman should be informed that sexual intercourse in pregnancy is not known to be associated with any adverse outcomes
