Rest pain is a burning sensation felt at rest, usually in the skin of the foot, especially the forefoot. It is a symptom of critical ischaemia due to severe, chronic, occlusive peripheral vascular disease.

Unlike intermittent claudication which indicates ischaemia of muscle on exercise, rest pain indicates ischaemia of the skin and underlying tissue.

The management of rest pain is discussed under chronic lower limb arterial insufficiency.
